Notes from Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting

Friday, September 25, 2009
By Kathy Smith

The Helotes Parks and Recreation Committee met last Wednesday, September 23, 2009.  The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. when a fourth member arrived allowing them to achieve a quorum.  Council member Ed Villanueva was also present.  Megan Mutschler, the Secretary, conducted the meeting since the Chair and the Vice Chair were absent.

The members absent were Scott Muenz, Chair; Bert Buys, Vice Chair, and Donny Jones.

Two of the agenda items were discussion of committee members’ assignments for the Christmas Tree Lighting event and the Christmas Parade.  They discussed the decorations for the City’s float in the parade and the Christmas decorations to be used in and around City Hall.  Linda Montemayor will put together of list of donors from last year, so they can be approached again this year.

Megan Mutschler has designed a pledge form for the members to use when soliciting donations.  Some changes in the form were suggested.  Members were asked to notify Megan about who they have approached for donations so she can keep a master list.

The Christmas Parade will be longer this year (more floats).  If I understand it correctly, the parade will start on, or toward, the north end of Old Bandera Road and end on Riggs Road around the Helotes Elementary School.

The last agenda item was a discussion on a design to display donations (leaves) from the “Fill the Tree” fund raising campaign.  Several ideas were discussed:  asking the Art Department at O’Connor High School to make a tree to post against a wall at City Hall to attach the donations (leaves) to; creating a “digital tree” on the Parks Committee’s page on the City’s website; recognizing or acknowledging donations in the Echo; making announcements at Movie Night, etc.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
