The Echo’s Mistakes

Saturday, July 11, 2009
By Kathy Smith

In every edition, The Helotes Echo acknowledges that some people just like to find errors, so they regularly include a few to meet this need.

As much as I hate to admit it, I’m one of those people, and I do appreciate the Echo’s efforts to make me happy!

In the Echo dated July 8, 2009, I read that a traffic light had been installed at Parrigan and FM 1560 and was working well.  I was excited to hear that, so I jumped into my car to go see the new light.  Unfortunately, there was no traffic light at Parrigin and FM 1560.

I’m guessing they were talking about the fairly new traffic light at Antonio and FM 1560.

I find errors in the Echo all the time, so I think I’m going to make this a continuing commentary.  Check back every week to read about the errors I’ve found in the Echo.

If you find errors in the Helotes Herald, let the Editor know.  I have to admit that won’t make me as happy as finding errors in The Echo, but we do need to know about them.

There are some who wonder why so many stories in the Echo start off with “Mayor Tom Schoolcraft” did this, and “Mayor Tom Schoolcraft” did that. Does the Echo receive pay for its fine pitching of Tom’s name? Does the Mayor edit every Echo article? Does the Echo notice that there are others helping to run things in Helotes? It seems to me that someone should get a BIG box and put “Mayor Tom Schoolcraft’s ego in it, then put it to bed and give the poor thing a rest. (Name not used due to fear of retaliation.)

Been there; done that. Who corrects the editor’s front page story in The Echo? The lead story moves to page seven with the following headline: “Council may reduce ‘drianage’ fee following publication.” After so many years of reporting on “councils and mayors” struggling with the “drainage issue,” you’d think a reporter could at least get the spelling right.
