Kolt Miller, 28, is a fourth generation rodeo cowboy who has been in rodeos from the time he could walk. His grandfather was Allen Larremore, a long-time resident of Helotes.

On January 18, 2011, Kolt was injured at the Fort Worth Extreme Bull Riding Competition. His neck was broken. The doctors have told his mother that he is lucky to be alive. He has a long recovery ahead of him, and his friends and family here in Helotes are trying to help with his mounting medical expenses, as he has no insurance.

On Sunday, May 15, 2011, at 3 p.m., at the Helotes Festival Arena on Leslie Road, there will be a Bull Riding Benefit held in Kolt’s honor. Everyone is invited to come out and see some great bull riding, eat some good food, and participate in a silent auction.

Tickets are $5 at the gate; children 5 and under get in free. All proceeds will go to the Kolt Miller Fund. Donations can also be made at any Capitol One Bank. Just tell them it is for the Kolt Miller Donation Fund.

For further information call 210-215-7743 or 210-695-8762. For entries call Tracy at 1-832-326-4075.

The Helotes Humane Society is looking for people who have experience in construction to advise them on cement work, pouring slabs, or kennel construction. If you know of anyone who could help them, they would be thrilled to talk to them.

The Helotes Humane Society (HHS) has been blessed with an offer they could not refuse. A special “army” of volunteers from City Year San Antonio has offered their help to the HHS on Friday, September 25, 2009.

This group of young people, ages 18 through 24, will be working in two areas of need. One is moving some donated dog kennel panels from San Antonio Animal Control to Happy Paws Groom and Board in Helotes, where the HHS currently keeps some overflow dogs. These are dogs that they do not have foster homes for that would otherwise be sent to a kill shelter or left on the streets.

The other half of the group will be working to spruce up around the HHS Pet Food Bank house. They can do landscaping, build picnic tables, and put foot pavers in place, but there is one thing they are missing – the materials for them to do the job!

They would love to have some donated lumber, nails, stain, xeriscape plants (that do well in the shade), mulch, and some stepping stones. Please consider donating some of these needed items to the HHS.

They are also looking for people who have experience in construction to advise them on cement work, pouring slabs, or kennel construction. HHS’s goal for that Friday is to put together at least six of the donated kennels. If you know of anyone who could help them, they would be thrilled to talk to them.

To make a donation to the above projects, whether it be materials or resources, please call 210-422-6242, or email: hhsanimals@yahoo.com.
